Exodus 5-6 “Freed to Serve: Trust and Obey”
1) Who is the Lord: Pharaoh doesn’t “know” the LORD in 5:2, but he was about to get an education (8:10, 22; 9:14, 29; 11:7). How do these verses address Pharaoh’s misconceptions about Israel’s God? What were some misconceptions you once had about the character of God?
2) Selective hearing: Moses was promised, twice, that his conversation with Pharaoh
wouldn’t go well (3:19-20; 4:21), and yet he seemed surprised when it did (5:22-23). In
what ways are we guilty of selective hearing of God’s words, in, for example, Psa. 37:4;
Jer. 29:11; Rom. 8:28?
3) Facing opposition: In Exodus 5:22-23, Moses experiences opposition and questions
the entire mission that the LORD has sent him on! Have you experienced
discouragement when obedience to God did not yield an immediate, discernible
blessing? Share your story with the group.
4) Name of the Lord: The exodus was not just about freeing Israel, it was also about God
making His “NAME” known (1 Chron. 17:21; Neh. 9:10; Jer. 32:20; Dan. 9:15). Exodus
teaches us that God doesn’t reveal Himself all at once (Exod. 6:3; cf. 9:16). What were
some things about God that you had to learn in stages?
