Current Series: Dealing with Our Past
For the next 5 weeks, we will be pausing our study of Romans to engage in some spiritual formation practices around dealing with our past. We will be utilizing the resources from Practicing the Way. You can find links to the group facilitator guides and video/audio teaching from John Mark Comer and Bethany Allen at the following links. Jonathan’s teaching on these topics will also draw from these resources as well.

You might be wondering why pause at Romans 5 and why this set practices?
In Romans 5, Paul laid out for us a compelling argument that we are born into a world that’s tainted by the effects of sin. This fracturing we experience traces back generations, all the way back to the moment that Adam and Eve changed their posture in their relationship with God. But Jesus came to set our relationship with God right. Yet, our lived experience tells us that we’re in a process of putting on our new lives in Christ.
Dealing with our past allows us to recognize where we need to break old habits we’ve inherited from our families. When we sinned in the past or others around us sinned, we’ve experienced fracturing, hurt, and pain that can run deep and hold us hostage to fear, anxiety, and resentment. Jesus wants to meet us, bring healing, and set us free personally and specifically. This practice gives us tools to engage the formation of our new lives in Christ.
I believe that when we return to Romans 6 in a few weeks, the work we have done here will allow the power of the gospel to work its way through our hearts and minds in a powerful and personally transforming way.
“For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes…This is accomplished from start to finish by faith.”Romans 1:16-17
