Some Doubted: …and some doubted
Matthew 28:17
1. Doubt : Work together as a group to form a one-sentence definition of ‘doubt’. Have you ever doubted any aspect of your faith? What questions have you wrestled with (intellectual or moral)?
2. Disciples’ rocky road : A common Christian longing is, ‘If only I had been alive in the days of Jesus.’ We may think this, but following Jesus around for three and a half years was anything but an easy job. What were some of the highs and lows the disciples experienced with Jesus (Matt. 14:28-33; 26:74-75; Luke 10:17, 20; John 6:66-69)? What are some of the highs and lows you have experienced in your faith?
3. ‘But some doubted’ : When the resurrected Jesus went to meet his disciples in Galilee, Matthew records, “when [the disciples] saw him they worshipped him, but some doubted” (Matt. 28:17). What does this mean? How could they have doubted? Haven’t they already seen Jesus alive from the dead (John 20:19-20)? Where else do we see this combination of doubt and worship (Matt. 14:31, 33)?
4. Stepping Forward : Pastor Jonathan taught us on Sunday that when we have doubts, we can either move toward them, or away from them. What does he mean by ‘toward or away’? Draw to your mind your biggest area of doubt right now. Are you willing to be honest with God in this area and pray “I believe, help my unbelief! (Mark 9:24)? What might your next step look like?
