Doing Life with Jesus: Doing Things Differently
Luke 5:33-6:11

1. Garments and Wineskins : After disclosing why His disciples do not fast, Jesus offers two parables which have
always confused me! The parables of the old and new garment and the old and new wineskin (Luke 5:36-39;
cf. Mark 2:21-22). Read these parables again. What do they mean at the pure, literal level? Why does the
garment tear and the wineskin burst?

2. Old and New : In explaining these parables, Darrell Bock reflects that “this new era Jesus brings simply cannot
be wed to the old practices” (Heb. 8:6-9, 13). What are some of these old practices which have to go (Mark
7:14-19)? What are the chief, defining characteristics of the new era (Gal. 3:3; Heb. 10:4)? In your own
context, what old practices did you have to shed when becoming a Christian, and what ‘new wine’ has taken its
place?

3. Sabbath Stories : Jesus didn’t seem to mind ruffling a few feathers. And His favorite day of the week for this
ruffling was always the Sabbath. Read the two Sabbath stories in Luke 6:1-5 and 6:6-11. What do these
stories have in common? Is there a blindspot in their thinking Jesus is trying to get them to recognize? How
does the additional detail contained in the Matthew account at the beginning of this section speak to this
blindspot (Matt. 9:13)?

4. Traditions of Men : Jesus made very clear that He didn’t come to abolish the law (Matt. 5:17), but to rescue its
true meaning from its corruption at the hands of the scribes and Pharisees. Jesus accused such people, “You
leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men!” (Mark 7:1-13). It is surprisingly easy to
unconsciously manufacture these ‘traditions of men’ in our Christian walk. What rules have you made for
yourself, or which you have noticed in the church, which resemble: ‘do not pluck grain on the Sabbath’ (Luke
6:1-2)?
