Seeking First: Follow the Fruit Matthew 7:15-29
1. Close Reading: After praying for God to enlighten your mind, read through Matthew 7:15-29 a couple times, slowly. Look for these three things: LIGHTBULB – something that shines from the passage, draws your attention; QUESTION MARK – something difficult to understand; ARROW – a personal application. Share the results of your study with your group.
2. Un/Healthy Tree: Jesus taught that a false prophet’s true identity will eventually become apparent. What kinds of ‘fruit’ might be clues to a false prophet (Ezek. 34:1-6; 2 Pet. 2:1-3, 10-19)? What kinds of false messages have false teachers proclaimed, in Bible times (1 Tim. 1:3-7; 2 Tim. 4:1-5) and today?
3. Lord, Lord: How is it possible to deceive yourself, so that you presume that you are ‘doing’ when you are only ‘hearing’ (Matt. 7:24; James 1:22-25)? How might it be possible to prophesy, drive out demons, and perform miracles in Jesus’ name and not enter the kingdom of heaven (Deut. 13:1-3; Matt. 24:24)?
4. House on Rock/Sand: Identify one of the foolish and sandy foundations on which people construct the house of their lives nowadays. Rather, we are called to build our house upon the rock (Matt. 7:24-27). What does this mean and how does one do it?
