Seeking First: Following Matthew 4:12-25

Close Reading: After praying for God to enlighten your mind, read through Matthew 4:12-25 a couple times, slowly. Look for these three things: LIGHTBULB – something that shines from the passage, draws your attention; QUESTION MARK – something difficult to understand; ARROW – a personal application. Share the results of your study with your group.

.Purpose in Life: Have you ever asked yourself, “What’s my purpose in life?” What’s Jesus answer to this question in Matt. 4:19? These words are worth memorizing – try to do so! “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” No two fishermen are the same – they have different boats, different nets, different targeted fish, different jobs on the boat, different ideal times to get out on the water. What type of fisherman has God made you?

.Drop Everything: How did the two sets of fishermen brothers respond to Jesus’ call (4:20, 22)? WHEN did they respond? HOW did they respond – by doing what two actions? When do you respond when Jesus calls you to something? What effect does a delayed or no response have on your ability to hear God when He calls again? What good things might Jesus be asking you to leave behind in order to follow Him more fully?

.Healing: Matthew 4:23-24 summarize Jesus’ ministry as one of teaching, proclaiming the the good news of the kingdom, and healing. Why was healing a crucial element of Jesus’ ministry (Matt. 11:2-5)? What do these small tastes demonstrate about the nature of God’s coming kingdom (Rev. 21:4)? Do healings’ happen today (1 Cor. 12:7, 9; James 5:14-15)? Have you or someone you know experienced healing?  Share these stories.
