The Bible Jesus Read: Remember!
Deuteronomy 6:10-8:20
1. Close Reading : After praying for God to enlighten your mind, skim through this long section, Deuteronomy 6:10-8:20. Look for these three things: LIGHTBULB – something that shines from the passage, draws your attention; QUESTION MARK – something difficult to understand; ARROW – a personal application. Share the results of your study with your group.
2. Do I Have To? : Parents hear a version of this question from their children all the time: “When your son asks you in time to come, ‘What is the meaning of the testimonies … that the Lord our God has commanded you?’ then you shall say…” (6:20-21). Their question today probably sounds something like, ‘Why do we have to go to church?’ Using Deuteronomy 6:21-25 as a model, how can we respond to that question?
3. The Lord Is a Warrior : Moses returns to the core issue facing Israel at this moment: their fear of military defeat before the nations in the promised land (7:17). Trace how Moses argues against this fear in 7:18-24 (remember that Egypt was a superpower compared to the petty kingdoms of the Promised Land). What would you consider your ‘core issue’ or ‘core fear’ right now? Imagine Moses speaking into this fear, preaching to you. What would he say?
4. Remember : Deuteronomy 8 is one long plea for Israel to ‘remember’! What are some of the things they are called to ‘remember’ (8:2-4, 11, 14-16)? And what was Moses afraid might happen if they ‘forget’ (8:12-14, 17-20)? Why is it so easy to forget our complete dependence on God? Where have you been trying to make it through the wilderness without His help?
