Emotionally Healthy Spirituality: Meditation What, Why, and How?
1. What: How does eastern meditation differ from biblical meditation (Matt. 6:7-8; Eccl. 5:2)? What does an understanding of the Hebrew word hagah add to our understanding of this practice (Isa. 31:4; 38:14)? Is it possible you’ve been meditating for years, without calling it ‘meditation’? How would you like to grow in this area?
2. Why: We learned this week that meditation can strengthen our faith (Rom. 12:2), give us rest for our souls (Matt. 11:30), and create a space where we can commune with God (Rev. 3:20). How does meditation accomplish these things and which do you feel most drawn to?
3. How: On Sunday we discussed forms of meditation which both move from our lives to God (Benedictine, Visualization, Google-It) and from God to our lives (Prayer of Examen, Target, Palms Up/Down). How are each of these forms practiced? Experiment with some of them! Are there any you might consider incorporating into your regular quiet times
