Below are a couple of options for your GGs to explore this week. Feel free to choose either one or both!
OPTION ONE : Another look at Deuteronomy 21-25
Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy contain within them 613 laws which at various times bore us, confuse us, scandalize us, and everything in between. However, these laws are simply an embodiment of a set of divine ideals. Our task to understand and apply these Old Covenant laws, as New Covenant Christians, begins with asking, ‘What is the core ideal or principle behind this law?’)
If you skim through Deuteronomy 21:10-25:19 in your Bible, you will notice frequent subsections with the title: ‘Miscellaneous Laws’. These apparently ‘random’ sections within the heart of Deuteronomy afford us the perfect opportunity to test Paul’s words to Timothy: “ALL scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” (2 Tim. 3:16).
Divide up Deuteronomy 21:10-25:19 among your GG. Let each person skim through their section and select a handful of individual laws they would like to discuss together as a group. Once everyone has their handful, go around the circle, read one law and then discuss it. What did this law mean in its original context? What is the divine ideal behind this law? (remember our divine-ideal ‘buckets’: Justice, Holiness, Sacrifice, Sacred Time!)
How can it be applied today? Work through as many laws as time allows.
OPTION TWO : Continue the discussion on ‘Faith at Work’
1. What did you learn from the interview on Sunday that you can apply at your workplace?
2. What particular challenges do you face as you seek to be a follower of Jesus where you work?
3. Have you ever thought that God has assigned you to the place you work (whether or not you are paid
or employed)? If yes, how has this or how can this perspective change the way you approach your
job?
