Week 4 – November 12, 2017
Exodus 7-10 “Freed to Serve: The Battle Begins”

1) Hardening Pharaoh’s Heart: Did God remove Pharaoh’s free-will when He ‘hardened Pharaoh’s heart’? Record the order of who hardened Pharaoh’s heart – God or Pharaoh – after each plague (7:22; 8:15, 19, 32; 9:7, 12, 34; 10:20, 27; 11:10). Without trying to resolve the apparent paradox, wrestle together with what God’s interaction with Pharaoh means.

2) Just a Stick: If Moses’ staff could talk, what a story it could tell. Recap together the story of the exodus from the perspective of the stick, both during the plagues and after (Exod. 14:16; 17:11; Num. 20:11). What ordinary means has God used to accomplished extraordinary ends in (and through) your life?

3) 10 ‘Second Chances’: If God wanted to, could He have killed Pharaoh and rescued His people in one fell swoop (Exod. 9:15)? How is God’s plan a picture of astounding patience and mercy (Exod. 34:6-7; 2 Pet. 3:9)? How has God had to display astounding patience with you as He multiplied His ‘second chances’?

4) Overhearing Omnipotence: Imagine being an Egyptian citizen witnessing these plagues (Exod. 7:5; 9:20-21; 10:7). Not all Egyptians hardened their heart like Pharaoh, in fact, Exodus 12:38 says that a 0“mixed multitude,” of non-Israelites, “also went up with them” from Egypt. What does this teach us about God’s larger plan for the nations (Gen. 12:3) at work in the exodus?
