The Bible Jesus Read: The Choice Is Yours
Deuteronomy 9:1-11:32
1. Close Reading : After praying for God to enlighten your mind, skim through this long section, Deuteronomy 9:1-11:32. Look for these three things: LIGHTBULB – something that shines from the passage, draws your attention; QUESTION MARK – something difficult to understand; ARROW – a personal application. Share the results of your study with your group.
2. Delusions of Grandeur : For the third time, Moses challenges something that Israel might say “in their hearts” (9:4; cp. 7:17; 8:17). The attention to these internal thought patterns shows God’s concern for Israel’s hearts. What is the lie Israel might be tempted to embrace after their victory over the nations in the land, and how does God correct this error? Are there any thought patterns, things you say ‘in your heart’, God wants to work with you to correct?
3. Moses’ Intercession : Deuteronomy 9 tells the story of two episodes where Moses had to ‘intercede’ for Israel after Israel’s sin sparked God’s just judgment (9:18-21, 25-29). What does it mean to ‘intercede on someone’s behalf’ as Moses did? At the heart of Moses’ intercession is an insistence that Israel is still God’s people (9:12,13, 26). Based on what we learn from Moses’ intercession, how is Israel still God’s people, even when they sin?
4. “Commandments” : How do you react to a statement like, ‘You have to keep all the commandments!’ There is perhaps no better collection of ‘command’ words in Deuteronomy than in this section (10:12-13, 20-21). List all the commands Moses gives in this passage. How do they give a full-orbed description of what it means to be
loyal to God?
