Exodus 1-2 – “Freed to Serve: The Story Begins”
1) God’s timing: How long were the Israelites slaves in Egypt (Exod. 12:40)? Identify two reasons God took so long from these passages: Genesis 15:12-16; 46:3. Share how God’s perfect timing has been present in your life.
2)Unstoppable: Three times Pharaoh tried to curse Israel (Exod. 1:11, 16, 22). Three times Pharaoh’s curse was turned to blessing (Exod. 1:12, 20; 2:5). What is it like to be loved by a God who can’t be stopped (Rom. 8:31; Psa. 27:1)? Who needs to hear this truth?
3)Rejection: What does Acts 7:24-25 further reveal about Moses’ reasons to killing the Egyptian? What must it have felt like to be rejected after trying to save (Exod. 2:14; Acts 7:35, 39)? What comfort do we have when rejected for doing good as we remember our God who was rejected and betrayed?
4)God hears: Though Exodus 1 is full of Israel’s oppression, it’s not until the end of chapter 2 that Israel cries out to God (Exod. 2:23). At the moment they cry out God heard, God remembered, God saw, God knew (Exod. 2:24; cf. 3:7; 6:5). Are there times in our lives we ‘groan’ but we don’t ‘cry out’ (James 4:2)? What does Exodus 2:24 teach us about God’s listening ear?
