Getting Real: Worshipping Right Psalm 24
1. I am Yours (1-2): Many of our songs proclaim this truth: “I belong to God, I belong to Jesus…” “I am yours, for all my days, Jesus, I am forever yours.” The Bible teaches that we belong doubly
to God. The first reason is because Jesus bought us (1 Cor. 6:19-20). What is the second reason, recorded here in Psalm 24:1-2? Do you think of yourself as a possession of the Most High God? How would this recognition give you both a deep sense of responsibility to this God, but also a deep sense of security?
2. Character of God (1-2): It is possible that David had in mind Deuteronomy 10:14 when he wrote this psalm, “Behold, to the Lord your God belong heaven and the heaven of heavens, the earth with all that is in it.” Read the surrounding context (Deut. 10:12-22) and discuss with your group how a heart-level knowledge of God’s nature and character (Deut. 10:14, 17-18) and what He has done for us (Deut. 10:15, 21-22) should impact how we live (Deut. 10:12-13, 16, 19-20)?
3. People of the Presence (3- 6):Psalm 24:3-4 picks up the teaching of Psalm 15 to describe the type of people God welcomes into His presence. What does it mean to have “clean hands” and a “pure heart”? Would you describe yourself this way? How does verse 5 (“he will receive … from the Lord … righteousness”) encourage us when inclined to answer the previous question, ‘no’ (2 Cor. 5:21)?
4. Jesus Is Coming Back! (7-10): What happened the first time the King of glory entered Jerusalem (Isa. 53:3; Matt. 27:22)? But what will happen the second time (Matt. 23:39; Zech. 12:10; 13:1)? How can we prepare today for that future day when the King of glory returns to His kingdom (Matt. 24:42-47)?
